Top Gear: Probably the best TV car show in the world |
The Top Gear journalists have found a great way of comparing the best sports cars. Which car do you think is best between the Ferrari F60, the Koenigsegg CCX and the McLaren SLR?
30/09/2008
One way of comparing two sports cars is to compare their top speed and acceleration.
That's fine if you are only interested in the engine part of things. However there is more to a good sports car than just a good engine like a good chassis or good brakes for example.
In order to test the whole of the car the Top Gear team has come up with a interesting concept: The Top Gear Power Laps.
The idea is that the same anonymous test driver ("The Stig") gets to do one lap with all the cars on the same test circuit (Dunsfold Park Aerodrome, Surrey, England).

Comment on cars classified from 1 to 10
The Koenigsegg CCX was first classified in position 7 (position 10 in the revised classification) with 1.20.4 (before they used the new spoiler). Despite this we have chosen not to add it a second time.
Although the Bugatti Veyron appeared on the show it was not tested on the track. It is very probable that it would make the Top 10.
Likewise older supercars like the Lamborghini Diablo, Jaguar XJ220, Bugatti EB110, Ferraris F40, F50 and McLaren F1 have not been taken round the track. Of these the Bugatti, the 2 Ferraris and the McLaren could possibly make it into the Top 10.

Comment on cars classified from 11 to 20
It's surprising to see how well placed the Corvette Z06 and Noble M15 are. Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear presenter) calls them "Giant Killers", which is a pretty good description. They cost a lot less than the Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani and Koenigsegg yet they beat them on the track.

Doesn't this list of cars look impressive? It's even more impressive when you see the cars that come after them: Prodrive P2, Audi R8, TVR Sagaris, Lamborghini Gallardo, BMW Z4 M Roadster, Mitsubishi Evo VIII, BMW M5, Porsche Cayman S, Ferrari 575M Maranello, Mercedes-Benz CLS 55 AMG, Aston Martin DB9, Porsche 911 GT3, BMW M3 CSL, Dodge Viper SRT-10(2), Porsche Boxster S, Subaru Impreza WRX STi WR-1, Audi S4 quattro 4.2, Porsche 911 Turbo...
You can find the list on the Top Gear website under "Power laps".
Even better than visiting the website, if you can get the english TV channel BBC2 the show is broadcast on Sundays at 21.00 (CET). A new Top Gear series starts about every 3 months. They film it for 3 months then show it for 3 months then film it for 3 months and so on. They also often show "Best of Top Gear" compilations.
Top Gear is a lot of fun to watch and swiss viewers will find that after watching it they won't watch the swiss programme "Motorshow" in the same light ever again.
